        WHAT IS HEALTH ?

According to World Health Organisation (WHO) (1948), health is defined as: 

Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well being, and not merely an "absence of disease" or "physical fitness".

A state of body when all the organs and systems are functionally properly and a perfect balance is maintained between the environment and the body "is know as health" . So health is of three types :

• Physical health: perfect functioning of all the organs and systems of body is called physical health.

• Mental health: mental health means a state of harmony and balance between the individual and the surrounding. Individual is free from anxiety and tension.

• Social health: means a man having happy family, a good house, a good job, good neighbours and friends who understand him.

FACTORS AFFECTING HEALTH

•Physical environmental factors like light, temperature, natural disasters like cyclone, flood, etc., soil type, rainfall, etc.

• Social environmental factors like job conditions, housing conditions, family's atmosphere and relationship between neighbours and friends So Social equality and harmony are necessary for good health of individuals. Social environment determines our physical environment.

•Public cleanliness so as to avoid accumulation of garbage, blocking of drainage, open and stagnant water, etc. which may increase the chances of poor health

• Supply of balanced diet for good health as it is essential for the normal body functioning, growth and development of body.

• Good economic conditions and good purchasing powers increase the chances of good health.

• Personal hygiene which includes self- cleanliness by developing clean habits.

• Regular exercise and yoga which keep the body and mind fit by improving blood circulation, opening sweat pores, reducing tension

•Relaxation by regular, adequate and undisturbed sleep which improve capacity to work.

•Healthy habits and avoiding the addiction because the surveys and statistics have revealed that drug and alcohol abuse has been on the rise especially among the youth.

•Awareness about diseases and their effect on different functions, vaccination (immunisation) against infectious diseases, proper disposal of wastes, control of vectors, etc., are necessary for achieving good health.

This proves that personal and community issues both play important role in determining individual's health.

CHARACTERISTICS OF GOOD HEALTH

 The important characteristics of a person having good health are :

•Free from sickness and diseases.

• Free from unnecessary anxiety.

• Free from social and psychological tensions.

• Self confidence.

• Feeling of joy in living.

• Ability to work efficiently and at his best.

 IMPORTANCE OF GOOD HEALTH

Good health is one's real wealth. A healthy person is always cheerful, active, willing worker and energetic. Good health increases one's efficiency for doing work. This contributes to his own progress, the progress of his family, the progress of his community and the progress of nation as a whole. Good health increases productivity and brings economic prosperity. It also increases longevity of people and reduces infant and maternal mortality.
